If I make a Hotel Reservation online, will I be charged that day or upon check in?
healyallena asked:
I’m making a reservation with a Hotel in NY but it’s not until June 2010 and I’m wondering, if I make the reservation and say I only have 50.00 in my bank account, will it overdraft my account?
Also, do they charge me upon arrival or the day I make the Reservation online

you will be charged when you check in.
but, that far in advance, they may want a credit card, just in case you don’t show up. it doesn’t get used, it’s just for some security for them.
This depends on the rate you are booking under and the conditions it is offered. If you are booking online you will have to guarantee your reservation with a valid credit card. In most cases you will guarantee your reservation with a credit card and pay for your stay on arrival at the hotel. There are, however, some hotels that offer discounted rates that require immediate payment and in this case it will be charged to your credit card immediately.
You are concerned about the funds in your bank account. As mentioned, you will require a credit card to guarantee your room so the amount in your bank account would not matter. As long as you have sufficient funds to pay from your account on check out you will be fine. If, however, you do not have a credit card you may have to prepay your reservation and make a cash deposit on arrival.
Before making your reservation check all change and cancellation policies with the hotel. Some hotels offer attractive rates however they do not allow changes or cancellations. If you do not show up you still have to pay. Others offer cheaper rates but require a minimum of two weeks notice of change or cancellation. The standard cancellation policies on other rates can vary from day of arrival to 48 hours prior to arrival but there are exceptions.
