how do you make a reservation for a hotel in the usa?

HI, I am from South Africa, I am going to Disney in Orlando, around June on vacation. How do I book a hotel room? especially online. I will use my visa card but it seems that the hotel websites want to take the entire amount for the stay and I would rather them hold a deposit in case I want to change my reservations. Also , what if they do take the full stay and charge me for it? What if I cancel how do you credit a card from in the usa? Thank you.

Cancellation policies do vary from place to place here in Orlando, but many are requiring full payment prior to arrival. You may be able to call 407-w-disney (I realize it’s LONG distance) to book with just a one night deposit and then pay in person upon check in. They may have changed this but cannot hurt to ask them.

Check the policy for each hotel. Few will charge a down payment until you check in. Each has a cancellation policy. Find if you must cancel 1 or 2 days before or if the cancellation is by 6pm of that day.
Policy may be different for foreign travel, but I doubt it.
The onsite Disney hotels are more expensive and will likely have a minimal cancellation policy. The Orlando hotels on [University drive, I think] are reasonable and a short drive from DIsney and Universal studios. Kissimee is a short drive and usually cheaper hotels, b ut the area is like a circus with attractions like bungee jumping, water parks and such.
I booked in Kissimee, didn;t like it and called DIsney and found a vacancy at a cheap price at the Polynesian hotel. It was nice.

most hotels dont actually charge you unless you cancel sooner than one week prior. Also, if you are planning on staying they charge you when you check out of the hotel and not at check in. They may reserve the amount of the charge on your credit and put a hold on it. Which means you cant charge anything else to it untill you leave the hotel. Which means you may need travelers checks or cash for other things.
You have a few options in booking your accommodations. If you would like to book your hotel room online, you will need to use your credit card. Depending on the site you use will depend on how your card is charged. Some sites will require you to pay for your accommodations upfront (especially if you are receiving a discount), some sites will just put a hold on your card to reserve your room. The most important thing to know is if a hotel takes a room out of their inventory, they are holding the room for you. If you do not show up, they have a room that they must sell, so pay close attention to the cancellation policy where ever you book.
You can also seek out a travel agent to book your trip. There is no additional charge for the services of a travel agent and they will help you through the booking process.
